Artist Profile: Amber Nelon Thompson

When discussing the top young talent in Southern Gospel music, one name often forgotten is Amber Nelon Thompson, 22-year old soprano for The Nelons.

We were introduced to Amber’s singing at a young age. She appeared on the Gaither Homecoming series at age 10, singing “Away in a Manger” on one of the Christmas DVDs.

The next time we heard from her was three years later, when she sang “Jesus, I Heard You Had a Big House”

Well, she’s all grown up now. As evidenced by her rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” If you think the first verse sounds sweet, just wait until you are blown away by the second verse!

As you can clearly see, Amber’s voice has matured beautifully. She definitely deserves to be in the discussion of the best young southern gospel singers on the road today.

Artist Profile: Great Adventure Gospel Band

Better known as The Garms Family, these guys are some great people from my home state. They have a new project coming out soon, and have put together a sneak peek “commercial” of the CD that you can listen to here.

Keep up with all the latest news  and concert schedule at their website, and keep up with their day-to-day happenings at their family blog. Additionally, you can now read some of their Southern Gospel insight at SouthernGospelBlog.com, including their first blog post here

Artist Profile: Ben Waites

So I was doing my usual YouTube viewing tonight, when I came upon an amazing young man who not many people probably know about. His name is Ben Waites, and he is the lead singer for the Gospel Tones Quartet, based in Central Louisiana. Here is Ben’s story:

He has attended the Stamps-Baxter School of Music since 2005. He is also scheduled to sing at a Gold City concert in August. Here are a few of my favorite clips of him singing both as a soloist and in his quartet:

I’ll just let the video do the talking for once.

Not bad for a 17-year old.

Artist Profile: The Todd Allen Family

As a sneak peek for a DVD review which will be posted within a few days, I decided to post an artist profile of the group I’m reviewing.

The Todd Allen family consists of a mom, a dad, and eight children. (No, that’s not a typo.) They claim Branson as their home, but they actually live year-round on their bus. Here is a little video trailer that tells their family story:

This past year, they appeared at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville. The dad and three of the sons (Caleb, Josh, Jared) made two separate single-song appearances on the main stage throughout the week. In the first video clip, the guys sing a classic quartet song, “Sing Your Blues Away”:

The next one is more of a fun song as they remake a Christmas song into an NQC song. I love Gerald’s reaction at the end:

As I stated at the beginning of this post, a review will be coming soon from their 2009 DVD project “On Stage In Arizona.” Be sure to check out their website for more information on the family, as well as when they will be in your area. I’ve seen them in person myself, you won’t be disappointed.
